FAQ's on Plastic Bag Alternatives
I like to re-use the grocery store plastic bags for garbage can liners. What are some environmentally-friendly alternatives?
There are biodegradable plastic bag options that are derived from corn or other more natural products rather than oil, these bags can be purchased at some grocery stores, such as Hy-Vee, New Pioneer Co-op, etc. and on-line. If you have a plastic garbage can, try not using a liner at all. Dump the contents of all of your small garbage cans into one main can before you take it to the curb. If you are old enough to remember pre-plastic bag days, think about what you used to do. If not, ask family and friends that might remember 'those days'. If you really must use a plastic bag as a liner, at least re-use an old one and try to re-use it multiple times before eventually throwing the whole thing away in the dump.
I like to re-use my plastic bags for cleaning up after my dog, is this ok?
At least you are attempting to re-use those 'single use' plastic bags which is a great first step! If you are looking to move on to step two, you can purchase biodegradable 'doggie-do' bags on-line and at various large pet stores. There are also special composters that you can purchase on-line that are specifically for pet waste.
What do I do with my cat litter after I have cleaned out the litter box?
As with the dog-waste issue, at least you are reusing the plastic bag. If you would like to get away from pouring used cat litter into a bag, there are a few options. As mentioned above there are special composters available on-line for pet waste. Various types of cat litter are more environmentally friendly than traditional clay litter as well; examples of such litters include corn, wheat, pine, etc. Many of these types are flushable - meaning you can flush them down the toilet and many can be composted regularly after most of the waste has been removed. Such litter is available at most pet stores, various grocery stores and on-line. Once again you can also purchase biodegradable plastic bags as an option as well.
* If your favorite stores do not offer certain products mentioned above encourage store managers to look into these options, the more they hear from consumers, the more change you will see.
