Strength for What Lies Ahead: Finding Balance in a Time of Crisis

July 29 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Join Iowa City writer Andy Douglas for a reading and discussion of Strength for What Lies Ahead. Explore practical ways to build balance, resilience, and community in times of crisis through fresh ideas on justice, localism, spirituality, and collective action.

Iowa City-based writer Andy Douglas will read from and lead a discussion based on his new book, “Strength for What Lies Ahead: Finding Balance in a Time of Crisis.” The book is grounded in the understanding that all of our current crises have a similar cause – the treatment of nature, the earth, and other human beings without the care and respect they deserve as part of the web of life. Ideologies of the day promote dominance, exploitation and self-centeredness. The author believes we need to embrace another, more interconnected, narrative about how we live in the world.

The book is wide-ranging in scope, focusing on collective strategies such as the importance of cooperatives, economic democracy, localism, and more resilient food systems, and on personal ones such as spiritual practice, emotional resilience, building community, singing and more. The book offers action steps after each chapter and features interviews with a number of experts.

This is Douglas’ fourth book. His previous books have included “Redemption Songs: A Year in the Life of a Community Prison Choir” and “The Curve of the World: Into the Spiritual Heart of Yoga.” He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa, is active with economic justice, prisoners’ rights and affordable housing issues. He is also very involved with the Community Sing movement.
