In early May, we gathered in Cedar Rapids for Spirituality in the 21st Century: The Awakened Brain—a powerful event centered on the vital connection between spirituality and mental health. Together, we explored what it means to be torch bearers: those who courageously speak about spirituality in a world often hesitant to do so.
We learned from Dr. Lisa Miller that spirituality isn’t a separate compartment of life—it’s an essential part of human wellbeing. Through awakened attention, connection and open-heartedness, we tap into a deeper source of resilience. These practices help us stay grounded, present, and attuned to both ourselves and others.
One of the most striking insights was that altruism is the single most impactful action we can take to improve mental health. When we act with compassion and care for others, our own wellbeing is strengthened. It’s a reminder that prayer doesn’t end in silence—it moves into action.
The event also invited us to reflect on character development, our sacred purpose and the importance of honoring our internal moral compass. Living aligned with our deepest values isn’t just noble—it’s necessary for spiritual and emotional integrity.
