Each day—sometimes two or three times a day—I go outside for a contemplative walk. Sometimes I walk far into the woods, sometimes to the edge of the river and sometimes I’ll just walk right outside my door to touch my bare feet to the Earth. Sometimes I find myself singing a prayerful song called “Hidden Things,” which I learned from John Philip Newell’s CD Sounds of the Eternal. (John Philip Newell has also written some lovely books about Celtic Christianity.) “Hidden Things” is based on the scripture Isaiah 48:6: “I will show you hidden things. Hidden things you have not known.”
This meditative chant, which repeats these words over and over in songful prayer, is in itself a “hidden thing.” Before your next contemplative walk, perhaps you’ll listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG-THBxIzz0.
What hidden things are being shown to you?
